There are opportunities across Chatham-Kent for local residents to take part in National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.
Among those opportunities is a healing walk and gathering at the public library branch on James Street in Wallaceburg that will start at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning. There will also be a gathering at Civic Square Park in Wallaceburg at 11 a.m. after that walk.
The events are being held to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools.
Federal government services like the post office will be shut down for the day, but municipal offices and services across Chatham-Kent will still be running as usual and that means garbage and recycling services are still on their regular schedule.
The National Truth and Reconciliation Survivors' flag was raised at the Civic Centre on Thursday, September 26 in advance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and municipal flags at all municipal buildings will be lowered on Monday.
Local residents are also being encouraged to wear orange to events on Monday to show their support for Truth and Reconciliation.
The Tilbury and Wheatley Branches of the Chatham-Kent Public Library will also be holding Orange Shirt Pin Drop-In events this week. The Tilbury branch will hold that from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, September 30 while the Wheatley branch will have a drop-in event during its open hours all week where you can make your own orange shirt pin.
Local radio stations in Chatham-Kent are also playing special programming for "A Day to Listen" with information about Indigenous arts and cultures, and how you can #DoSomething.
