Leela Thomas named as new Walpole Island chief

Walpole Island First Nation has elected a new chief.

On Saturday, residents elected Leela Thomas as chief for the next two years.

Former chief, Daniel Miskokoman withdrew his name for the job after having the role since 2022.

Anika Altiman topped the polls for councillor with 435 votes followed by Charlene Altiman with 284.

There were 54 people hoping to get one of the 12 seats on band council.

A swearing in ceremony will be held on Monday, September 23.
