The Canadian government is introducing new gun measures next month to make it harder to manufacture firearms.
As of September 1, a valid firearms licence will be required to buy or import firearm barrels and handgun slides. These changes are in addition to the current requirement to have a valid firearms licence to acquire cartridge magazines and ammunition.
According to the government, regulating the sales and importation of firearm components and magazines is an important part of its strategy to combat gun-related crime.
"With these new measures, we're bringing in a balanced approach that directly targets criminals trying to manufacture and sell illegal firearms while allowing law-abiding gun owners access to key firearms parts and components," said Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions, and Intergovernmental Affairs.
The federal government's strategy also includes investments in border security and law enforcement to combat firearms smuggling and trafficking, and investments in communities to address gun and gang violence.
