8th annual #WeAreLakeErie day is on Tuesday

The 8th annual We are Lake Erie day on Tuesday, August 27 hopes to bring awareness the toxic algal blooms that the lake has been experiencing for over a decade.

The Environmental Defence agency is urging people to show their love for Lake Erie on social media throughout the day by posting photos and stories using the hashtag #WeAreLakeErie to create a virtual wave of support.

In sharing photos and stories, the organizers hope it will demonstrate to decision-makers the important role the lake plays in the lives of so many people. Lake Erie is a source of drinking water for millions of people and home to many complex ecosystems.

Earlier this summer, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced its 2024 Lake Erie algae bloom forecast. This summer’s bloom was forecast to be moderate to larger-than-moderate, and with Lake St. Clair facing a similar issue, the root of the problem needs to be addressed to reduce these algal blooms in the future.
