Man wears storm trooper mask during botched robbery in Chatham

A 49-year-old man is facing a handful of charges after an alleged bank robbery in Chatham and an unsuccessful robbery at a business in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police reported the suspect wore a surgical mask during an alleged robbery at a bank on Lacroix Street in Chatham on Friday and then wore a storm trooper mask during an attempted robbery at a business on Richmond Street in Chatham three days later.

Police said the suspect demanded money from a teller at the bank and got away with the cash on Friday, but the only force that was with him during the attempted robbery at a business on Monday was the police force.

Officers said the man left the business empty-handed and was arrested while walking a short distance away from the shop.

Investigators credit surveillance video and witness statements for allowing officers to link both robberies to the same individual.

He has been charged with wearing a disguise with the intent to commit a criminal offence and two counts of robbery.
