Chatham-Kent Plowing Match returns Saturday

The 87th Annual Chatham-Kent Plowing Match returns on the weekend.

From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at TriHawk Farms (11844 Smoke Line) in Thamesville, residents can enjoy the tradition that is the plowing match.

"The plowing match is a tradition that has truly stood the test of time," said Stephanie Richardson, with the Chatham-Kent Plowmen's Association. "The art of plowing is a lost art and it is very neat to see, especially horse plowing."

Richardson noted that the association has added booths and activities for kids to enjoy. This year, there will be face-painting and button-making alongside tractor and horse plowing, the Queen and Princess of the Furrow competitions, and a 4-H Food Booth.

"We will be crowning a new Chatham-Kent Queen and Princess of the Furrow this year," Richardson said. "The Princess of the Furrow program is designed to give younger ladies a 'taste' of the program with the hopes they might return to the Queen program."

The Queen position is open to those aged 17-23, while Princess contestants must be between the ages of 11 and 16. Both competitions require a speech and an interview.

Participants in all of the day's competitions will receive a monetary prize and a bag of goods from local businesses.

Admission and parking are free.
