Vehicle check turns up suspended driver from Chatham
A 21-year-old Chatham resident who wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel is facing a handful of charges after provincial police checked on a vehicle in a parking lot on Communication Road.
Ontario Provincial Police said a member of the Chatham Detachment pulled up to the passenger vehicle near Creek Road and initiated a traffic stop at around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after seeing some drug-related equipment in the vehicle.
The officer determined that the driver was not impaired, but further investigation showed that the driver's licence had been suspended and that the driver was also committing several other offences.
The 21-year-old Chatham resident was charged with:
- driving while under suspension
- driving without a currently validated permit
- failing to surrender an insurance card
- not using authorized licence plates
- failing to apply for a permit after becoming the owner
- driving at an unlawful hour with a G1 licence
- driving with a G1 licence without a qualified driver
- driving with a G1 licence with a front-seat passenger who was not a fully licensed driver of at least four years
The driver was later released from custody with a future court date and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Traffic stop leads to charges
A 25-year-old Chatham man is facing multiple charges after he was pulled over by police.
Elgin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they stopped a vehicle at about 7:30 p.m. on Monday when officers noticed that it was being driven by a known suspended driver.
The traffic stop happened on Park Avenue East near Stirling Lane.
During the driver's arrest, police said that the investigating officer found signs that the man could be under the influence of alcohol. A roadside test did register an "alert" when administered.
The man is facing charges including driving while under suspension and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.
The vehicle has been impounded for 45 days and the accused is scheduled to appear in Chatham court on September 16.

Police investigating rash of b-and-e's
CK police are investigating after around $20,000 worth of items were reported stolen from a Chatham home.
Police said they received a report of the break-and-enter on Tuesday and that the incident took place in the area of Heather Drive sometime over the last three weeks.

A bicycle worth $750 has been reported stolen from a Windfield Crescent home in Chatham.
CK police learned of the reported break-and-enter at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
It's believed the bike was taken sometime between Saturday and Sunday.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Chatham-Kent police received a report of a residential break-and-enter in the area of Adelaide Street in Chatham.
Police learned that nearly $500 worth of property was taken during the incident, about two hours before the report was made.
The investigation is ongoing.

Multiple arrests made on strength of warrants
A 45-year-old Chatham woman is now facing an additional charge of obstruction following her arrest on Tuesday night.
CK police said officers recognized the woman, in the passenger seat of a vehicle that had been pulled over, as wanted on an outstanding warrant in relation to a mischief investigation.
"Through police interaction with the woman, a new charge of obstruct police was also determined," police said in a release.
She was taken to police headquarters for processing and was later released with conditions and a future court date.

A routine traffic stop will see a Chatham man facing new charges and no vehicle.
CK police said officers pulled over a vehicle at around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday. During the stop, police learned that the man was wanted for failing to attend court, it was also discovered that he was banned from driving in Canada.
The 41-year-old man was arrested and faces a new charge of driving while prohibited. Police also had the vehicle towed and impounded for 45 days.

A 54-year-old Chatham man was arrested after turning himself in to police in Blenheim.
Police said he was wanted for failing to attend court.
The man was processed and released with a future court date of August 26, 2024.
