Firefighters from Tilbury and Wheatley stations were called to the scene just after 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.
When crews arrived at the house on Cemetery Road, it was determined the fire originated in the bedroom.
Crews worked to contain the fire, reporting no injuries or exposures. The cause of the fire is listed as accidental with investigators putting the blame on smoking.
Alan Smith will begin his new role with the municipality on July 20.
