With the May long weekend in the rearview, summer is on the horizon -- and with that comes weather advisories.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Chatham-Kent on Tuesday because of hot, humid conditions. Temperatures are expected to reach 31 degrees Celsius during the day, feeling much warmer with the humidity, and stay near 21 C overnight.
The weather agency warned that the high temperatures and humidity could lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. The elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses are at the most risk of suffering from heat-related illness.
Symptoms of heat-related illness may include:
rapid breathing
dizziness
fainting
vomiting
rapid heartbeat
extreme thirst
decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine
Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality.
It's suggested that people try to stay indoors, or in cooler spaces during the hottest part of the day. Other tips to stay cool include:
drinking plenty of fluids, especially water
wearing light, loose clothing
taking cool showers or baths, or using cool, wet towels on your face, neck, or arms
avoiding heavy meals/using the oven
keeping curtains closed to block sun during the day
Slightly cooler temperatures are expected Wednesday as showers and thunderstorms are possible through the day. As a result, the hot and humid conditions are not expected to reach heat warning criteria.
