The hockey community in Chatham-Kent and beyond is mourning the loss of a young man killed in a crash on Highway 401 in London.
The Blenheim Blades posted on social media that they are saddened by the sudden passing of their Captain Craig Spence.
"Craig was a leader on and off the ice. His play was outstanding and earned him Stobbs Division Player of Month for November as well as Stobbs Division Defenceman of the Year this past season," read the post. "But to the Blades family, he was Spence, easy with a smile, always willing to step up if help was needed, he was a dedicated teammate, brother and a friend to all of us in the Blades family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Craig’s family, and all those who knew and loved him. Forever #10 ‘Our Captain’"
The Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) is also mourning the death of Spence, saying it is saddened to learn about his passing.
"He was a consistent performer and an excellent teammate all the while participating in all three junior leagues in the OHA (OJHL, GOJHL, and PJHL)," wrote the OHA.
The OHA reflected on Spence's hockey career, saying he was the runner-up in the division’s scoring race this past season with 74 points in 36 games, scoring 25 goals and assisting on 49.
Blades General Manager Bob Price said Spence was drafted by the Mississauga Steelheads in the 7th round of the 2018 draft, was a leader, and made everyone else around him better.
"He’s worked hard for the team and his personal goals and team goals. He elevates the play of those around him and is well respected in the dressing room, for sure,” said Price.
The Chatham Maroons said Spence will live on in their hearts.
"It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we mourn the sudden passing of our dear friend and former Assistant Captain, Craig Spence. Craig was more than just a stellar athlete on the ice; he embodied the essence of what it meant to be a genuine and wonderful human being. His presence graced not only the rink but also the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him," the Maroons said. "As a leader, Craig went beyond the call of duty both on and off the ice. His commitment to excellence was matched only by his unwavering dedication to our Chatham-Kent community. Whether lending a helping hand during the Beast Buddies last paddle of the season or simply illuminating the room with his infectious smile, Craig's impact was immeasurable."
The Maroons extended their thoughts and prayers to the beloved Spence family, cherished friends, teammates, and coaches during this incredibly difficult time.
"May they find solace in the countless memories of Craig's outstanding motivation, skill, thoughtfulness, and that radiant smile that could brighten even the darkest of days. Craig's legacy will forever be etched into the fabric of our organization. He will always remain a beacon of inspiration, reminding us to strive for greatness both on and off the ice," said the Maroons.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would only confirm the deceased was a 22-year-old from Chatham.
On Tuesday afternoon, the OPP reported a two vehicle collision on Highway 401 in the eastbound lanes at Colonel Talbot Road in London that left one person deceased.
Police said the victim was killed when they were ejected from a pickup truck that collided with a transport truck just after 3 p.m.
The individual was pronounced dead at scene, according to the OPP.
A portion of the highway between Colonel Talbot Road and Wonderland Road was closed for several hours during the investigation.

The public is invited to pay their respects to Spence on Sunday, April 21 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Alexander and Houle Funeral Home located at 245 Wellington St. W., in Chatham.
Family will not be present.
A funeral mass for Spence will be held on Monday, April 22 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church at 180 Wellington St. W., in Chatham at 1 p.m. A family-only interment is to follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Chatham.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to consider making a donation to the Craig Spence Memorial Scholarship Fund.
A fundraiser has been set up to help the Spence Family in their time of need, including funeral costs and all other expenses.
