Trial for Windsor man charged in deadly crash in Chatham set for October

New trial dates have been set for a man accused of killing two people and injuring three others in a head-on crash during the Retrofest Classic Car Cruise in Chatham in 2022.

Brett Iler, 28, of Windsor had the opening day of his trial at Chatham-Kent's Provincial Offences Court in Blenheim delayed on March 4, 2024 because of a shoulder injury after a fall at his home in late February. Iler had surgery that day and his trial was again delayed on March 6, 2024 because he was still on post-surgery medication.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, the court heard both the defence and the prosecution had agreed to the new trial dates of October 9, 10, 11, and 17, 2024.

Iler was charged with two counts of careless driving causing death and three counts of careless driving causing bodily harm after a four-vehicle crash just outside of Chatham that killed two people and seriously injured three others on May 27, 2022.

Investigators said the man was driving east on Queen’s Line at Dillon Road when his vehicle crashed with a pickup truck travelling westbound. The man’s vehicle then hit an older-model Buick that had five people inside. Two of the occupants in the Buick died at the scene.
