Global birdwatching challenge returns

The 27th annual Great Backyard Bird Count has arrived.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is urging people to get outside for the family day long weekend and join a global effort to help birds.

The event happens every February, this year it occurs from Friday, February 16 to Monday, February 19. About half a million people participated in 2023, with people reporting sightings of 7,500 species of birds from over 200 countries.

The event is free, easy, and fun. All you need to do is download the eBird app or Merlin Bird ID app, watch birds for 15 minutes or more any day during the event, and start documenting.

It can be done in backyards, local parks, or conservation areas.

The Bird Count helps the NCC to track what bird population levels are and what habitats are being impacted by climate change in Canada.
