Arrest made in arson investigation

An apartment fire has been deemed arson.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Police responded at 1:40 a.m. Saturday to an apartment building on Erie Street North in Wheatley.

The fire was contained to a single unit though tenants from other apartments were evacuated due to smoke in the building. Police said that displaced tenants have been put up at local hotels with the assistance of victim services and the Red Cross.

Investigators determined that the fire was set intentionally. Damages were caused by fire, smoke, and water, though a monetary amount hasn't been estimated.

No injuries have been reported.

A man was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he was held for bail.

The investigation is ongoing.

Pair face mischief, threat, and assault charges

A man and woman were arrested after damages were caused at a local inn.

Chatham-Kent police said damages were done to the duo's room and the hallway and that staff members were threatened during the disturbance.

The man was charged with mischief under $5,000, failing to comply with a probation order, and uttering threats of bodily harm.

The woman was charged with mischief under $5,000 and assaulting a police officer.

Man faces multiple charges following disturbance

Chatham-Kent police arrested a man on King Street West following a disturbance.

The suspect was first observed attempting to enter vehicles in the area. He then continued down the street and reportedly began yelling and screaming at passersby.

The man was arrested for causing a disturbance and resisting police officers, it was later discovered that the man was also wanted for failing to appear in court in relation to previous charges.

The man was transported to Chatham-Kent Headquarters and held for bail.
