Fire officials in Chatham-Kent will hand out multi-gas meters to Wheatley area residents next week.
The alarms will be free of charge and distributed door-to-door for residents in the evacuation zone starting Tuesday, February 20, and continue for the rest of the week.
Residents outside the evacuation zone will be to pick up alarms at the Wheatley Resource Centre located at 108 Talbot Road East.
“This reassurance campaign continues our proactive and protective measures to the Community of Wheatley as we continue to bring stability to the area affected by releases of gas,” said Fire Chief Chris Case in a news release. “We’re thankful for the Provincial funding to be able to provide the people of Wheatley with practical measures to keep themselves, their families, and the community safe.”
The multi-functional meters can detect carbon monoxide, propane, and natural gas alarms.
The alarms are being paid for with a provincial grant from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, which provided $280,000 in funding to implement local priority projects to enhance emergency preparedness within its communities and prevent petroleum-related emergencies.
