Ontario Provincial Police are issuing a public thank you to a caller who reported a suspected impaired driver on the Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent.
Police said the call came in Saturday afternoon and an officer with the OPP's Chatham Detachment was able to find the vehicle in the eastbound lanes of the highway shortly after 3 p.m. where it was recorded going more than 150 kilometres per hour before it left the highway via the Communication Road exit.
OPP said they were able to stop the vehicle on Communication Road near Maynard Line, adding that after the vehicle stopped for police, it reversed at low speed into one of the police cruisers.
The driver was taken into custody without incident after that collision.
A 42-year-old Newmarket resident was charged with two counts of impaired driving (including impairment by alcohol and drugs) along with stunt driving.
No injuries were reported.
The driver's license has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
Police are also thanking the member of the public who reported the vehicle, adding that officers were able to pull the vehicle off of the road safely as a direct result of that tip.
