Mother-son duo to race for Canada in BMX World Championships

Hilary Pennie and her 7-year-old son Levi have both qualified to represent Canada in the upcoming BMX World Championships.

The pair are four-year members of Chatham's Wolfe Creek BMX track, though they try to race or practice wherever they can.

Hilary explained that Levi started riding his first two-wheel bike when he was only three and a half years old. And when a former neighbour suggested her son try BMX racing Hilary was willing to give it a go.

"After doing a learn-to-ride program we signed him up and his love for the sport was immediate," she said.

It turned out that love was contagious. "After a few weeks, and much egging on from him, I decided to try out a ladies' night and just like Levi I was immediately drawn into the sport," Hilary shared.

During the season, which runs from April to October, the Pennies' practice and race two days a week and try to race at a different track at least once. "Sometimes this comes as a challenge as the closest tracks are a 2-3 hour drive," Hilary said. "Last season we raced a lot in Michigan and Ohio," she added.

During the off-season, mom and son ride indoors and weight train to stay in top shape.

Levi races a 20" frame bike, at the intermediate level against other 7-years-olds. For Worlds, he'll move up to the 8-year-old category and will face expert racers as well.

Hilary, 44, races a 24" cruiser on the track. She's ranked number one in Ontario three years in a row.

To qualify for Worlds, the duo needed to race a UCI BMX qualifier, which they did in Stouffville. The top 16 riders from each category across Canada earned a spot.

The BMX World Championships will take place in Rock Hill, South Carolina from May 12 to May 18.

Hilary explained it's not just about the competition for her. "BMX racing has created a special bond between Levi and I. We experience the nerves, excitement, and challenges together," she said. "When we accomplish something big, we both have the best cheerleader by our side, who understands what it took to get there," she added.

Wolfe Creek BMX welcomes new riders of all ages. Helmets and bikes are available to rent at the track, all you need is a willing body and an open mind.
