Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers says $1 million worth of drugs was seized by local police in 2023, thanks to an increase in tips.
Crime Stoppers, a non-profit that supports police in preventing and solving crime through anonymous tips, released its 2023 statistics Tuesday.
The organization received 543 tips last year, up from the 479 tips received in 2022, data shows.
Those tips led to 10 arrests, 32 charges, and 86 cleared cases in 2023.
In 2022, 15 arrests were made and 41 charges were laid as a result of information Crime Stoppers received, data shows.
Despite the fewer arrests in 2023, there was an increase of more than $897,000 worth of drugs seized.
“Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers has enjoyed a very successful and productive 2023,” the report stated. “Through the combined efforts of tipsters, the media, police agencies and the hard work of our board members, many incidents were successfully investigated and solved.”
Since the inception of Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers in 1987, the organization's efforts have helpedpolice seize over $115 million worth of illegal drugs and stolen property.
"We have received over 30,000 tips from the public resulting in over 7,600 arrests," the report said.
January is designated as Crime Stoppers Month. Organizations across Canada highlight their successes and thank their supports.
"It’s an opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous support of the community, Chatham-Kent Police and media in helping Crime Stoppers achieve the success that we have," the report said.
