Fantuz named to inaugural Football Ontario Hall of Fame class

Andy Fantuz is headed into another Hall of Fame.

The Chatham native is part of the inaugural 2023 class of inductees in the Football Ontario Hall of Fame.

Fantuz, a graduate of John McGregor Secondary School, was a star receiver at Western University in London in the early 2000s.

With the Mustangs, he won the CIS Rookie of the Year in 2002, and the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2005 as the top football player in CIS.

Fantuz was then chosen third overall by the Roughriders in the 2006 CFL Draft, and spent six seasons in Saskatchewan, winning the Grey Cup in 2007, and the Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 2010.

He then signed with the Tiger-Cats and spent another six seasons playing in Hamilton before retiring in 2018.

The other members of the inaugural class include the late Larry Haylor, who coached at Western for 20 years, and the late Bernie Custis, who is credited as being the first Black quarterback in professional football when he played for the Tiger-Cats in 1951.

Custis then went on to become a teacher and football coach.

There's been no word on if or when an induction ceremony will take place.
