Gas and fuel tax cut will be extended

The Ontario government intends to introduce legislation this week to extend its gas and fuel tax cut until June 30, 2024.

If it passes, the Ford government will have cut those taxes for two years after first introducing it on July 1, 2022.

"We know every dollar helps, and this gas tax cut is another way we're keeping costs down for Ontario families and businesses," said Premier Doug Ford.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation lauded the move, saying the tax cut has saved the average two-vehicle family more than $500.

"The best thing governments can do to help make life more affordable for taxpayers is to cut taxes," said Ontario director Jay Goldberg.

The federation recently declared that "gas taxes stink" by delivering 1,000 air fresheners to the Ford government.

In July 2022, the government cut the gas tax by 5.7 cents a litre and the fuel tax by 5.3 cents per litre.

"On Thursday, I will provide an update on our plan that will continue with our government's targeted, responsible approach so we have the flexibility needed to get through this economic uncertainty while laying a strong fiscal foundation for future generations," said Finance Minister Peter Bethanfalvy.

The Ontario government presents its annual Fall Economic Statement on Thursday.
