Councillor Harrigan expected to return to official duties after medical leave

A Chatham-Kent councillor who has been on medical leave since January is expected to return to her seat around the horseshoe in CK council chambers on Monday.

Ward 6 Councillor Marjorie Crew noted at the end of Monday night's planning meeting that Ward 1 Councillor Melissa Harrigan, who announced in December last year that she would be temporarily stepping aside from her Council duties for cancer treatment and recovery, is set to return to council chambers at the next Chatham-Kent Council meeting on October 30, 2023.

To mark the occasion, Crew is encouraging all council members and municipal staff who will be present at the meeting to wear pink or even more specifically, a "Her Fight is Our Fight" shirt. Those shirts are being sold in support of Mammography at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance with $5 from every sale going to the cause.

Crew also noted that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"I know that [the Council meeting] will be like the last day of the month but I think that it's fitting that we recognize and acknowledge our own warrior who was been missing for almost a year," said Crew.

To date, the "Her Fight is Our Fight" campaign has raised more than $30,000.

When Harrigan first announced her leave, she also said that she hoped her story would help other women take important steps to screen for breast cancer.
