Fake 9-1-1 about a man with a gun call prompts quick response, warning from police

Chatham-Kent police are clearing the air on why there was a heavy police presence on McNaughton Avenue East in Chatham a week and a half ago.

Police said officers were called to the area at 11:35 a.m. on October 5 after an anonymous 9-1-1 caller reported seeing a man standing on his front porch holding a gun.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene and closed off the intersection at Taylor Avenue and McNaughton Avenue East for public safety reasons.

Police said their investigation later showed that it was a false alarm and that there wasn't any threat to public safety after all.

The road was reopened, the schools in the area were advised that everything was under control, and the investigation has wrapped up now.

Police are also taking the opportunity to remind the public of the seriousness of making 9-1-1 calls, noting that not only do false emergency calls divert valuable resources away from genuine emergencies, but they can also cause unnecessary panic and disruption in the community.

Officers are warning that making a fake emergency report is a criminal offense and can have legal consequences.

Chatham teen back in custody after breaching release conditions

A 17-year-old Chatham youth who was already facing an aggravated assault charge is spending some more time in police custody after he was arrested for the second time in less than two weeks.

Chatham-Kent police said the youth was initially arrested on October 7 for aggravated assault and then later released with conditions, which included a curfew that required him to be at his home between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.

Police said they got a tip on Monday that the youth was breaching that release condition, so they started investigating and "formed grounds to charge the youth" in connection with the case.

An investigating officer then allegedly found the youth at 9:05 p.m. at an address in Chatham that the youth was known to visit. Police said the teen answered the door when the officer knocked on it.

The teen was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to comply with his release conditions. He was taken into custody and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

She was arrested, charged, and taken back to police headquarters before she was released with conditions and a future court date.

Police said when they arrived at the scene, they found the man and arrested him for trespassing.

Officers said during the man's arrest, they allegedly found a knife in his possession and confirmed that he was under conditions that banned him from having weapons.
