OPP urge calm as violence continues in Israel

The Ontario Provincial Police urges residents to report allegations of hate-related incidents and crimes in light of the war in Israel and the possible ground offensive of Israeli troops into Gaza.

The Associated Press reported that 300,000 military reservists had amassed on the border with Gaza, and officials ordered the evacuation of the northern area, where 1.1-million people live. It could not confirm a ground offensive.

The escalation comes after Hamas launched a surprise attack on residents in southern Israel last weekend. Over 2,800 people on both sides have died so far in the fighting.

It said it is aware of global online threats of violence and the call for worldwide demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians.

There were protests in large Canadian cities last weekend and smaller demonstrations in other communities this week, including Windsor, where 300 people peacefully marched.

"While the OPP respects the right of everyone to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, everyone also has a right to a safe environment," it tweeted on Friday morning. "All those involved in a demonstration have a responsibility to ensure the event remains lawful, peaceful, and safe."

The OPP said it increased patrols in areas of cultural and religious significance and is in communication with community leaders. Acts of hate, it said, will not be tolerated.

"We understand members within our community are deeply affected and want to assure Ontarians that we continue to focus on public safety," said the OPP. "Report any allegations of hate-motivated crime to the OPP or your local police."

Anyone reporting a life-threatening emergency should call 911 immediately, while those reporting other incidents can call 1-888-310-1122.
