The jury in the Nathaniel Veltman trial heard first thing on Thursday that it would be an extremely short day for them as the Crown had very little evidence left to introduce in its case.
Federal prosecutor Sarah Shaikh began the day by amending a previous exhibit regarding Veltman's pickup truck. The original exhibit had Veltman stepping on the gas pedal five seconds before hitting five members of the Afzaal family while they were out for a walk on the evening of June 6, 2021.
Talat Afzaal, 74, her son Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, and their 15-year-old daughter Yumnah Afzaal were all killed. Their young son, who was 9-years-old at the time, was the lone survivor.
The exhibit was changed from five seconds to four. It now says "from four seconds before impact the accelerator pedal depressed at 100 per cent, from five seconds the brake pedal was never pressed."
Shaikh then showed a series of security camera clips from Veltman's apartment building, starting from 3:38 a.m. June 5, 2021.
At that time Veltman is shown entering the lobby of the building, checking his mail, then heading for the stairwell to the second floor. Another camera shows him, seconds later, leave the stairwell and head toward his apartment.
At 3:21 p.m. the same day, video footage showed Veltman leaving his apartment with another man dressed in a black t-shirt, red shorts, and red shoes. The two of them can be seen leaving the building at 3:22 p.m.
About 10 minutes later Veltman re-enters the building, checks his mail, and heads back up to his apartment.
At 7:05 p.m. Veltman leaves his apartment again wearing jeans, a black jacket, and black running shoes. He leaves the building by 7:06 p.m.
The next video showed him returning to the building at 1:19 a.m. June 6, 2021, carrying what appeared to be a shopping bag. He can be seen checking his mail and heading to his apartment.
The next series of clips show Veltman taking multiple cardboard boxes and a wooden pallet to the building's garbage room. This takes place from 1:37 a.m. to 1:48 a.m.
Shaikh then read an agreed upon statement of fact that there were two more clips that weren't played that showed Veltman carrying a garbage bag and another item to the garbage room at 2:01 a.m. and returning to his apartment by 2:02 a.m.
At the conclusion of the videos, the prosecution closed its case.
Court will resume at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Veltman has pleaded not guilty to four counts of terrorism-motivated first-degree murder and one count of terrorism-motivated attempted murder.
