Man found hiding in a closet

A 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman are both facing charges after police were called to investigate a domestic dispute in Chatham.

Police said officers showed up at the address on Thames Street at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday after getting a tip about a man and a woman arguing in a unit on that street.

Officers said they spoke to a woman who was there and later found a man hiding in a closet.

Police said they arrested both of those people after learning that they were bound by release conditions that required them not to associate with one another. The man was also banned from attending that specific address.

A 21-year-old Chatham man and an 18-year-old Chatham woman were both charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order. The woman was also charged with one count of facilitating a breach of conditions.

Both of the accused were taken to police headquarters and were set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

Porch pirate caught red-handed

A 38-year-old Chatham-Kent man is facing a handful of charges after Chatham-Kent police allegedly caught him with his hands full with some stolen packages.

Police said they were called to a business on Richmond Street in Chatham for a theft investigation shortly after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and saw some video surveillance footage that showed a man removing two boxes from the business just minutes after they were delivered that same morning.

Police said they were able to identify a suspect because of some "previous interactions with the officer" and found the man just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, walking along Richmond Street with the stolen boxes still in his possession.

Officers said the stolen property was returned to its rightful owner.

The suspect was arrested and charged with two counts each of theft and possession of stolen property.

He was taken to police headquarters and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.

Chatham-Kent man arrested for the second time in two days

A 42-year-old Chatham-Kent man who was just arrested earlier this week in connection with a domestic violence case is already back in police custody.

Police said the man was arrested late Tuesday night after officers were called to investigate a domestic dispute on Merritt Avenue in Chatham.

At that time, the man was charged with assault and resisting arrest and was later released with conditions, one of which required him to stay away from anywhere the victim is known to live, work, or attend school -- and to stop communicating with her.

Police said they got a tip shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday that the man was violating the conditions, so they went to the woman's home.

Officers said they found the man there and arrested him for failing to comply with his release conditions.

A 42-year-old Chatham woman was also arrested and charged -- she's facing one count of facilitating a breach of conditions.

The man was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing while the woman was released with conditions and a future court date.

Open vehicle hatch leads police to wanted man

A tip about a vehicle that had its hatch open overnight led police right to a wanted man.

Chatham-Kent police said they got that tip at 12:10 a.m. and that the vehicle was parked on Gray Line in Tilbury East Township.

When police found the owner of the vehicle, they also confirmed that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court.

A 22-year-old Tilbury man was arrested and later released with a future court date.
