'Unexpected repairs' push back Memorial Arena opening by three weeks

The ice won't be ready at Chatham's Memorial Arena until the end of September.

That's the word from municipal officials in Chatham-Kent, just days ahead of the expected opening date of September 5.

A release from the municipality said the arena on Tweedsmuir Avenue is now expected to open for ice rentals on September 26 after some "unexpected repairs."

Officials said a leak was discovered under the floor and there were issues with some piping when they were running their annual tests of the compressor room system at the facility.

As a result, the municipality will be opening up Erickson Arena on Delaware Avenue in Chatham ahead of schedule -- it'll open on September 8.

That move is aimed at helping to ensure ice times are available for the start of the skating season.

Officials also added that "some ice times will be shifted at various arenas throughout Chatham-Kent to accommodate ice times from Memorial Arena."

CK News Today has reached out to the Chatham Maroons for comment on a possible contingency plan for their practices and games, but had not heard back from the team as of the time of publication.

The team was scheduled to open its home games at Memorial Arena on September 17 at 7 p.m. against the Strathroy Rockets.
