Stolen vehicle crashes into Wallaceburg railway crossing during chase

Two people in their early 30s are facing a handful of charges after Chatham-Kent police chased down a vehicle that was reported stolen to Middlesex OPP.

CK police said their investigation started when an officer saw a vehicle parked on Albert Street in Wallaceburg shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday and was able to confirm it had been reported stolen on July 14.

Police said when they tried to initiate a traffic stop, the driver allegedly took off at a high rate of speed and tried to evade police by changing streets multiple times.

Officers said the vehicle eventually went over a railway crossing on Cemetery Road at a high rate of speed, causing it to come into contact with the railway and that damaged the vehicle to the point where it couldn't drive anymore.

Police said they found two people inside the vehicle -- a man in the driver's seat and a woman in the passenger seat -- and they were both arrested.

Officers said they also found a stolen cheque and a bag with some suspected cocaine in it.

As a result of the investigation, a 31-year-old Southwold man was charged with two counts of possession of stolen property and one count each of flight from police, drug possession, drawing a document without authority, driving without a valid driver's license, and driving without insurance.

He was taken to police headquarters and was set to be held there pending a bail hearing.
