Heat, humidity to blanket region this week

It's expected to be hot and humid across the region for the next few days.

Environment Canada issued a Heat Warning on Tuesday afternoon for areas including Sarnia-Lambton, Chatham-Kent, Windsor and Essex County, London and Middlesex County, Elgin County, Oxford County, Perth County, and southern Huron County.

The national weather agency said temperatures on Wednesday are forecast to reach 30 degrees Celsius, and Thursday will be very humid with humidex values in the upper thirties.

Friday is expected to be extremely hot with humidex values reaching 40 for many areas. Minimum temperatures in the low twenties will provide little relief from the heat.

Cooler temperatures are expected Saturday.

We're reminded that hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality, and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category.

Symptoms of heat illness include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

We should drink plenty of water even before feeling thirsty, stay in a cool place, and check on older family, friends and neighbours.

People or pets should never be left inside of a parked vehicle, and outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
