Ontario to expand self-serve vehicle registration

It will soon be easier for you to buy or sell a used car in Ontario.

The Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery announced Wednesday morning that it has expanded the online Digital Dealership Registration (DDR) system to include the sale of used vehicles as well as new ones.

Ontario Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery Kaleed Rasheed said the expansion of the online program means car buyers won't have to stand in line to get the ownership signed over.

"Providing self-serve vehicle registration to car dealerships is a win for businesses and a win for consumers who can drive their car right off the lot," said Rasheed.

The expansion has also gotten the green light from professionals in the used-vehicle industry.

"The DDR initiative is an example of how technology can assist modern Ontario dealerships in business," said James F. Hamilton, interim manager and legal services director of the Used Car Dealers Association of Ontario. "Enabling car dealerships to register vehicles online and issue permits and licence plates directly to purchasers reduces paperwork, delays, and red tape for dealers and consumers."

The DDR was first launched in March 2022 for new vehicle sales. It was later expanded to include trade-ins. Dealers register the vehicle online with ServiceOntario, and issue the licence plate and permit to the owner almost right away.

While a visit to ServiceOntario is no longer needed, car buyers may still use the in-person method if they choose.

About 380 dealerships in Ontario now use DDR, and more are signing on each week, according to the Ministry. About 4,200 transactions have been completed to date.

ServiceOntario reported that vehicle transfers account for 4.7-million, or 8.1 per cent, of its 58-million yearly transactions.

Complete information about DDR can be found on the province's official website.
