One lot of a moisturizing nasal spray has been recalled due to the risk of microbial growth, which could lead to infections.
The recall was issued for 30mL bottles of Rhinaris Nasal Mist lot 230391A. The product is an over-the-counter drug used to moisturize and lubricate dry nasal passages in adults and children at least two years of age.
Health Canada issued the recall after the manufacturer, Pendopharm Division of Pharmascience Inc., said using a product contaminated with microbes may lead to a sinus infection.
“The company's testing showed that the preservative in the product may not be as effective as expected, which could lead to an increased risk of growth of microbes such as molds or bacteria over time if they are introduced into the product,” read a statement from Health Canada.
Although rare, sinus infections can lead to more serious complications, such as nasal abscesses, skin infections, or meningitis, an infection and inflammation of the fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Those with the affected product are advised to stop using the spray and return it to where they purchased it. Those with health concerns or experiencing adverse symptoms should consult a healthcare professional.
