Canada Day safety reminder

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue is reminding the public to stay safe this Canada Day holiday weekend by keeping some safety tips in mind.

Fire officials said consumer fireworks can be set off three days before, on, and three days after Canada Day until 11 p.m. and must be set off on private property, not municipal property, such as streets and parks.

“We always recommend leaving the fireworks to the experts and attending a professional display,” said Public Information Officer Whitney Burk. “This weekend there are many local professional fireworks displays happening across CK.”

Parents are also advised to keep sparklers away from children. Hot sparklers can burn and cause serious injury. Burk recommends celebrating with glow sticks and other glow in the dark items.

CK Fire also urges adult supervision to avoid child drownings.

“For many families, the long weekend will include activities such as boating and swimming. The absence of adult supervision is a factor in most child drownings," said Burk "Whether it's a pool or at the beach, always watch children actively around water – even if they can swim.”

She strongly urges everyone to wear a lifejacket when heading out on the water, to check the weather, and monitor the forecast.

Fire officials also recommend checking the smoke and CO alarms in summer homes, check the date of the alarms, and replace their battery every 10 years.

“Cottages are required to have working smoke alarms on every level. While it is not law to have alarms in your trailer or RV, we always advise having them – especially if you’re sleeping there,” explained Burk.
