Charges laid in 'hate-motivated' stabbings at University of Waterloo

An international student is facing charges in connection with what police have called the "hate-motivated" stabbings of three people at the University of Waterloo.

A professor and two students were stabbed inside Hagey Hall on Wednesday. According to witness reports in several media outlets, a man came into a Gender Studies class and asked who the professor was. He then pulled out a knife and attacked.

All three victims suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

"The accused targeted a gender-studies class and investigators believe this was a hate-motivated incident related to gender expression and gender identity," police said in a statement released to the media on Thursday.

Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, 24, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, four counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and one count of mischief under $5,000.

Police say he was an international student who was studying at the University of Waterloo.
