A street near downtown Chatham will be closed for the next two weeks to install new sewers.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said William Street North will be shutdown between June 26, 2023 and July 7, 2023 to install new sewers from Colborne Street to Stanley Avenue.
Mayor Darrin Canniff told CK Mornings with Chris, Allanah, and Matt the new sewers will attract more housing and businesses to the area.
"The big news with that is what's going to happen when they do that sewer and then one more tranche of it, it's going to open up housing for all the east end because right now there's not any housing being built because there's no sewer capacity," said the mayor.
Canniff said the road closure will be inconvenient for some people, but the new sewers will payoff in the end by attracting investment.
"You're going to start seeing a lot more construction out there because of putting the new sewers in," Canniff said.
The municipality said all lanes of William Street North will be closed between Colborne Street and Stanley Avenue and local traffic will be permitted up to excavation areas within the work zone only, adding excavation areas will not be accessible to any traffic.
Engineering Technologist Mark Ceppi noted emergency vehicles will have access into the work zone.
Detours will be posted.
