Hot and dry summer in store

Hot and humid conditions are expected to usher in the summer season.

Summer officially arrives at 10:58 a.m.  Wednesday, June 21.

Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder said the overall trend for the summer is warmer and drier.

"For southwestern Ontario, we're expecting warmer than normal temperatures to start, and really for the duration of the summer period," said Flisfeder.

Flisfeder said the average high for this time of year is around 25 C, 77 F with nighttime lows near 15 C, 59 F.

"As we continue through the rest of June into July, we're expecting temperatures to remain above seasonal for the duration of the summer," he said.

With hot and humid conditions, the chance of severe thunderstorms and the threat of tornadoes also increases.

"So, it's important to have reliable weather source, keep up to date with your forecasts and alerts and have a plan in place ahead of time," said Flisfeder. "So, now since we are in a pretty quiet time of year where we haven't had many storms recently, it's a good chance to think about where you would go if a severe thunderstorm did approach your area."

Flisfeder said models also suggest slightly drier than normal conditions for the summer season, however precipitation forecasts are notoriously more difficult, especially given that it's also thunderstorm season.

"We can predict a dry season and then all it takes is one event for that forecast to be completely wrong," he said. "Having said that, the guidance that we have at our disposal right now is indicating near or slightly drier than normal conditions for the summer period."

The first day of summer is the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. The sun will rise at 5:50 a.m. and set at 9:12 p.m.
