WestJet shutting down Sunwing Airlines

Low-cost carrier Sunwing Airlines will soon be integrated into WestJet's main operations.

On Saturday, WestJet's plans to absorb the budget-friendly airline went public. The Canadian Press reportedly obtained an internal memo from President of Sunwing Airlines Len Corrado, in which he said this change is a growth opportunity for Sunwing and its employees.

The process is expected to take two years.

WestJet first announced the purchase of Sunwing Airlines in March of last year. At the time, WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech cited that Sunwing Airlines would complement WestJet by offering more affordable flights.

Just over a week ago, WestJet also shared that "ultra-low fare airline" Swoop would be integrated into the main company by October.

It's unclear whether Sunwing Vacations will also shut down. There's a possibility that Sunwing tour package customers may be taking WestJet planes to and from their destination by 2025.
