Chatham baseball legend Fergie Jenkins is weighing in on where Major League Baseball (MLB) should be heading with future expansion on the horizon.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has repeatedly stated his desire to expand to 32 teams and Nashville, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Montreal, Portland and Vancouver are potential options.
Jenkins said Vegas and Nashville will likely end up with MLB teams soon, but he would like to see a team back in Montreal as soon as possible.
"Too bad that baseball hasn't got real smart and put another ball club in Montreal. They need another Major League ball club there in Montreal," said Jenkins.
Jenkins said Major League Baseball has no choice but to expand because the revenue is so high.
"There's going to be 32 teams within another year or so. Vegas is going to get a team and probably Nashville. What's happened in the game of baseball, is there's so much money in TV revenue they're going to have to expand. They've done in football, they've done it in basketball and hockey, and now it's going to be done in baseball," Jenkins said.
Jenkins will be joined by Larry Walker, the only other Canadian Major League Baseball Hall of Famer, in Chatham for his statue dedication on Saturday.
Walker, who made his debut with the Montreal Expos in 1989, will be at the statue unveiling ceremony in front of the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre on Saturday beginning at 1:45 p.m.
