There will be plenty of horsepower out at Dresden Raceway this weekend -- but the power won't be coming from the horses.
The Dresden Demolition derby is set to take over the raceway on Saturday with the pitch opening at 10 a.m. and the first official smashup starting at 2 p.m.
Jason Dickson with the derby said they will also have a Power Wheels derby for the kids this year, adding that anyone who wants to take part just needs to bring along their Power Wheels vehicle and a helmet for the children who are participating.
He said they also have something new this year for their "feature event" -- a Truck Royal Rumble.
"It's old-school WWE style... one truck enters and every 30 seconds another truck comes in the ring," said Dickson. "The winner of that gets $5,000... it's something we're looking forward to, it's never been done around here."
Dickson said there will be a good variety of classes with a mini car smash, a minivan class, and what he referred to as "the big boys" -- the pro truck and pro V8 classes.
He said the amount of time the drivers spend preparing for the event can range quite a bit depending on the competition they are entered into.
"Normally it takes a little bit of time to get [the vehicles] going... the pro guys -- the V8s -- those guys spent weeks maybe months, lots of money on their stuff," said Dixon. "Then we have the stock classes, too, which is basically more for everybody, they just get a car the weekend of, strip it, do the necessary safety features and then they run it."
The entry fee is $20 for adults and kids under 10 years old will get in free.
Dickson said there will also be a pit party with live music after the derby is done.
