Canada needs volunteers more than ever, says organization

Just as National Volunteer Week gets underway, an organization providing leadership and expertise on volunteerism is sounding the alarm.

Volunteer Canada reported a dramatic drop in the number of volunteers countrywide.

About 65 per cent of organizations that rely on volunteers are experiencing a shortage. At the same time, 32 per cent say demand for their services has increased.

The group said the impact has been profound, and it's introducing a plan to create a national action strategy to strengthen Canada's volunteering infrastructure.

"Volunteering weaves us together, strengthening the fabric of our community by sharing our time, talent, and energy to support one another," said Volunteer Canadda President and CEO Doctor Megan Conway. "It reinforces our ability to grow, thrive, and create change."

Conway said volunteers find friendship, develop trust, and gain a sense of belonging. With each action they take, their community's wellness improves.

National Volunteer Week starts Sunday and continues until April 22.
