Salvation Army CK challenges residents to pay it forward

The Salvation Army's One Bag Challenge is returning to Chatham-Kent.

Throughout the month of April, Chatham-Kent residents are encouraged to purchase a bag of items needed at local food banks for then challenge others to do the same.

Community and Family Services Manager with the Salvation Army Chatham-Kent Nicole Shaw said there are many items they are in need of right now.

"Things we need like toilet paper, hygiene items, peanut butter, [school snacks,] canned fruit and vegetables and non-perishable items. Then challenge five friends, coworkers or neighbours to do the same," Shaw explained. "You can do that by taking a photo and posting it to social media and you can tag people or you can personally ask five people."

Shaw said once bags have been filled, they can be dropped off at one of the following four Salvation Army locations in Chatham-Kent:

- Chatham - 19 Raleigh St.

- Wallaceburg - 600 Lowe Ave.

- Ridgetown - 18 Main St. E.

- Blenheim - Basement of Blenheim Baptist Church 24 Talbot St. E.

According to Shaw, the Salvation Army Chatham-Kent has done the One Bag Challenge in the past and it was a big success. Shaw added that the organization continues to see more and more people access the food banks locally.

"More new people that we haven't seen before that are having a hard time making ends meet," she said. "Just having an option of food covered, can open it up for them to be able to afford other expenses."
