UPDATE: On Monday, Chatham-Kent council approved Councillor Melissa Harrigan's medical leave of absence, as she steps away from her duties to undergo cancer treatment.
Speaking virtually, Harrigan told council that she is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is doing well and feels really positive about the future.
Municipal councillors and staff wore pink shirts Monday that said “her fight is our fight” in support of Harrigan.
Details surrounding Chatham-Kent Councillor Melissa Harrigan's leave of absence should be made official on Monday evening.
If approved by council, Harrigan will be authorized to be absent from all council and committee and local board meetings for a period of three successive months or more unless otherwise advised by Council.
Different councillors will take her place on four committees and local boards for up to six months during her absence.
She will also continue to get paid while on leave with a compensation review at the end of the six months.
Councillor Harrigan is also being asked for a progress report in the fifth month of her absence, if she hasn't returned to active status yet, to prepare for her return or to prepare for an extension, if necessary.
In mid-December, Harrigan revealed that she has breast cancer and will be temporarily stepping aside from her council duties to begin chemotherapy. She has Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
Harrigan's empty council seat had a symbolic pink balloon in her place during Wednesday night's budget meeting to represent her spirit.
"Melissa Harrigan has not just been an amazing colleague over the last four years, but has become a true friend," council colleague Anthony Ceccacci posted on social media. "Although she's unable to attend tonight’s budget meeting in person, let this be a reminder of her spirt and fight! She is a passionate leader and we are all sending her strength, love and prayers! You are with us and we are with you!"

Councillor Carmen McGregor also posted a comment on social media saying her wisdom will be missed through this year's budget process.
"Take the time and get well," said McGregor.
