Longtime downtown Chatham businessman passes away

A longtime businessman in downtown Chatham has passed away.

Eddie Mariconda passed away on Saturday while surrounded by his family.

Mariconda was born in Serino Avellino, Italy, and immigrated to Canada after completing his training as a Master Tailor. He then married Diane (Diamantina Matteis) on February 14, 1953.

"Dad was also a Merchant, and spent the better part of 70 years in Downtown Chatham, as a haberdasher and investor," read his obituary. "Dad served on numerous boards, committees, and service clubs. One of his proudest service roles was as President, and later, as a Paul Harris fellow, with Rotary International."

His family also remembers their patriarch as a master gardener, who shared his bounty with family and friends every year.

"Dad‘s greatest pleasure came from spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to play cards, bocce balls, and to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dad left us with a legacy of sage and witty one-liners," said the family.

Mister Mariconda is survived by his wife, Diane, just five weeks shy of their 70th Wedding Anniversary, his children, grand children, great grand children, sister-in-law, brothers, and sister.

Visitation will be at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street Chatham, today from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday at the funeral home at 11 a.m.

The family would appreciate if donations go to Rotary International or the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
