Police find missing and stolen packages after stopping Hwy 401 speeder

Two young men are facing charges after OPP found several packages that had been reported missing or stolen after stopping a vehicle for speeding on the Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent.

Provincial police said they pulled the vehicle over in the westbound lanes of the highway just after 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday after recording it going 171 kilometres per hour in a posted 100 km/h zone.

Police said they arrested the driver -- a 19-year-old from Welland -- and the passenger -- a 20-year-old from Windsor -- after they both allegedly "attempted to obstruct the investigation."

Police also reported finding numerous packages inside the vehicle that had been reported missing or stolen. OPP later confirmed with CK News Today that the packages were delivery parcels that were addressed to other individuals.

As a result of the investigation, the 19-year-old driving the vehicle was charged with one count each of stunt driving, driving without a licence. The driver's licence was suspended and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days as a result of the charges.

Both of the co-accused were also charged with one count each of obstructing a police officer and 13 counts each of possession of property obtained by crime.

They are both scheduled to appear in a Chatham courtroom at a later date to answer to the charges.
