Spitfires acquire goalie, trade overage player

The Windsor Spitfires made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday.

The OHL club first announced that it had acquired goalie Ian Michelone from the Flint Firebirds in exchange for the Spitfires' 2023 13th-round draft pick and a conditional 2025 10th-round pick.

"Michelone has created depth for our organization," said Spitfires general manager Bill Bowler in a media release. "He has played in our league, and we can see him competing for the net."

The goalie, who will join Mathias Onuska and Joey Costanzo between the pipes, is a native of Kanata, Ontario. He appeared in ten games for the Firebirds, with a 4.37 goals-against average and a .884 save percentage. His record was 4-4-0 with one shutout.

Not long after that announcement, the Spits made another move, trading overage forward Josh Currie to the Kingston Frontenacs. Kingston will send its 2024 11th-round draft pick to Windsor in return.

Currie was picked up by the Spitfires last season before the trade deadline. The Pickering native played in 41 regular season games and recorded three goals and 15 assists for 18 points. He appeared in 25 playoff games and scored three goals for nine playoff points.

The Spitfires are back in action Thursday night when the North Bay Battalion come to the WFCU Centre.
