Scammers trick woman into giving them $8,000

Chatham-Kent police are warning the public about a scam that duped a local woman out of $8,000 recently.

Police said the woman received a call last week from a man who said he was a lawyer and another man who was posing as the woman's son-in-law, who they claimed had just been arrested.

The men asked the woman for money for his bond, so she went to the bank and took out the $8,000 they asked for, then turned it over to an "appointed officer" who showed up at her home in a black Ford F-150.

Police said the fraudsters had told the woman not to speak to anyone about the incident because there was a "gag order" in effect because of the severity of the incident, so she didn't confirm the story with any family members before she handed over the cash.

Officers are advising you to protect yourself from falling victim to scams by recognizing that scammers use intimidation tactics and want to pressure you into providing information and making decisions quickly.

They are also advising you to take your time and do your research before taking any action -- especially from people who are asking you for money.
