Those 12 and up can get Pfizer bivalent shot starting Monday

Starting Monday, October 17, all Ontarians 12 and older can get the bivalent COVID-19 booster shot.

Health Canada authorized the Comirnaty shot almost a week ago. It is more effective against the Omicron strains than previous vaccines.

The province receives its first shipments of the Pfizer bivalent vaccine from the federal government this week, and the COVID-19 vaccination portal is open for booking appointments.

Callers can reach the provincial booking system at 1-833-943-3900 or online. Some health units have their own booking systems where residents can set up appointments.

Eligibility was open to everyone over 18, but now those 12 to 17 can get it too, so long as they have completed their primary COVID-19 vaccine series.

At the same time, provincial health officials stress the importance of getting a flu shot this season.

Those are available starting November 1 at doctor's offices, public health units, or participating pharmacies.

"We are entering into the fall season where traditionally we see a rise in cases of respiratory illness, including COVID-19," said Chief Medical Officer of Health Doctor Kieran Moore. "We recommend Ontarians stay up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations at the appropriate interval since their last dose, and get annual flu shots when it becomes available."

Flu shots can be safely given at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccine.

Those over 60 can also access antiviral treatments, like Paxlovid, if they have COVID-19 symptoms.
