The return of motorcycles to Leamington this weekend has prompted the OPP to issue a caution for drivers.
Hogs For Hospice, one of the year's biggest fundraisers for the Erie Shores Hospice, is back to a live format after being on hiatus the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The motorcycles will take the streets from Friday, July 29, to Sunday, July 31.
To accommodate the expected large turnout, the Municipality of Leamington is closing some streets starting Friday.
Seacliffe Drive West from Erie Street to Sherk Street will close, along with Forest Avenue, Conover Avenue between Stewart Crescent and Forest, and Lombardy Lane where it enters Seacliffe Drive West.
Residents will need to provide proof of address to access those roads.
While the return of the motorcycles is welcome news for motorcycle enthusiasts and the local economy, the OPP is taking the opportunity to remind people to be safe around motorcycles.
"We want to remind motorcyclists and drivers that it's important to share the road responsibly. Observing posted speed limits and keeping alcohol, drugs and distractions off our roads are vital to reducing the number of motorcycle collisions, injuries and deaths," said Acting Staff Sergeant Ian Rathbone, South Operations Manager of the Essex County OPP. "This is a reminder that safety does not take a holiday."
Drivers are being asked to exercise patience as there will be a large number of motorcycle riders on area highways this weekend. The OPP suggests that drivers be vigilant at all times, as riders often appear quickly.
The OPP will have additional officers on area roadways to ensure the easy flow of traffic. If you are planning to ride your motorcycle, do not use alcohol or drugs and plan your trip accordingly.
The theme for this year's return of Hogs For Hospice is "Back in the Saddle". The event includes a concert series at Seacliff Park, plus a motorcycle rally around Point Pelee National Park, and a non-denominational church service on Sunday morning.
Throughout the event's existence, it has raised $1.5-million for Hospice.
