UPDATE: Freight train hits and kills pedestrian in Chatham

A Chatham woman is dead after being hit by a train.

Chatham-Kent police said the woman was hit by a CP train and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Her name has not been made public.

The collision took place near Colborne Street and Princess Street just before 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

“Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service offer their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the female party,” wrote police in a news release issued Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews were on scene for several hours and traffic was impacted. Officials say all railway crossings between Merritt Avenue and Princess Street were blocked. The railway crossings at Keil Drive and Bloomfield Road remained open.
