Outdoor enthusiasts in Chatham-Kent have a lot to celebrate next month.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has two events planned for the month of June involving local trails.
On Thursday, the municipality announced that it received a Trail Care grant from Trans Canada Trail to help maintain the CASO Trail.
Residents are invited to take part in a trail cleanup on the section of the CASO Trail in Ridgetown between Erie Street North and Victoria Road on Wednesday, June 1.
The trail cleanup runs from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Anyone interested in joining can email cktrails@chatham-kent.ca to register. Representatives from the Chatham-Kent Trail Committee and Trans Canada Trail will also be on hand to introduce themselves to the community.
Participants will meet on the east side of Erie Street N. at the CASO Trail entrance.
Just a few days later, on Sunday, June 5, the municipality will celebrate the grand opening of the Greenfield Global Trail.
Formally known as the Round the River Route, The Greenfield Global Trail is officially completed. The 21.5-kilometre long cycling route travels around the Thames River along Grande River Line and Riverview Line and features bike lanes on both sides of each road along with multi-use pathways.
The grand opening is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Cyclists will line up shortly after and can use the entire route while walkers and runners will travel a 3-kilometre route in the opposite direction. According to the municipality, refreshments will be served following the event.
"The roads will be closed to non-local traffic with support staff available," municipal staff said through a media release. "Come out and enjoy this activity as we have an active transportation mode for every person, and it is an event for the whole family."
The Greenfield Global Trail Grand Opening takes place at the Blue Rotary Bench & Green Bike Repair Station at Grand Avenue W. between Fergie Jenkins Parkway and Bear Line. Parking will be located at the Mary Uniac Health Sciences and St. Clair College Campus Parking Lots.
