Strong winds in the forecast have prompted the local conservation authority to issue a flood watch for areas of Chatham-Kent.
The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued the watch Wednesday afternoon for the Lake Erie shoreline, including Erie Shore Drive.
Officials said wind speeds could rise above 40 km/hr overnight and into Thursday morning.
"Winds are predicted to remain between 45 and 60 km/hr, with gusts over 70km/hr possibly reaching as high as 90 km/hr at times Thursday," the LTVCA said in a release. "Wave forecasts suggest waves up to around 2 m could be seen in nearshore areas. "
There is also a risk of flooding along Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent.
Officials said similar wind speeds in the past have caused significant flooding in the area and water levels are fairly close to where they were at this time last year.
"Should the higher wind speeds last for more than a few hours the flooding could be significant. The long duration of the wind event could worsen the flooding as well," the LTVCA said.
Residents in the area are being reminded to keep an eye out for local conditions.
The flood watch will be in effect until Friday.
