Outbreak declared at the hospital in Chatham

A new outbreak has been declared at the Chatham hospital.

Chatham-Kent Public Health reported the outbreak at the Medicine B Unit on Monday. The new outbreak has three cases and brings the total number of active outbreaks to four.

Hospital officials said the health unit will be working closely with the hospital to manage the outbreak until it's declared over.

"As part of CKHA’s pandemic response action plan and in alignment with the hospital’s infection prevention and control guidelines, a number of additional initiatives have been implemented in response to the outbreak on the Medicine B Unit," wrote Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) in a statement. "CKHA will continue following these measures until Chatham-Kent’s Medical Officer of Health rescinds the outbreak order."

The Medicine B Unit will not allow any visitors during the outbreak. All other visitor rules remain in place.

CKHA reminds the community that the hospital remains a safe place to receive care.

"Since the onset of this pandemic, CKHA has taken decisive and immediate action with the ever-evolving dynamics of COVID-19. The safety of staff, physicians, patients, care partners, visitors and the community at large, has and will remain the top priority," said hospital officials.

There were also 34 new COVID-19 cases reported in Chatham-Kent on Monday.

Hospital officials reported 11 patients with COVID19 in the hospital with three of them being treated primarily for the virus. None of them is in intensive care.

Ontario reported four more COVID-19 deaths and 1,741 new cases.

The hospital numbers continue rising across the province with 655 COVID-19 patients in the hospital. The province said 158 are in the ICU with 92 on a ventilator.
