Two stolen vehicles recovered in the same day
A 24-year-old Walpole Island man is facing several charges after police recovered two stolen vehicles and some ammunition.
Chatham-Kent police said their investigation started at around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday when officers were called to an address on Gosnell Line near Ridgetown for a report of a stolen vehicle.
Police say they were told a 2004 Ford Expedition was stolen from the victim's driveway earlier Wednesday morning along with some other property worth about $8,000.
About half an hour later, police were called to investigate a second stolen vehicle on Grand Avenue East near Curran Crescent in Chatham.
Officers said at that time, they learned that the second victim had left his work-issued white Nissan van running outside the door when he saw someone jump in and drive away with it.
While police were responding to the report of the stolen van, they also found the 2004 Ford Expedition that had been reported stolen earlier in the day.
The vehicle was towed from the scene and police were able to contact the rightful owner.
Officers were also able to track down the second stolen vehicle -- the stolen white Nissan van -- by using GPS updates. Police said they found the van in the area of Wallace Street in Wallaceburg.
Investigators said they also found a man there who matched some security footage from the scene where the vehicle was taken, so they arrested him as a suspect in the case.
Police said when they searched the man, they allegedly found some loaded firearm magazines on him that appeared to have live .22 calibre ammunition in them even though he had a weapons ban that prohibited that.
The accused was arrested and charged with one count of theft and one count of stolen property along with three counts of breaching a prohibition order. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing and police are asking anyone with information to contact Constable Jayme O’REILLY at JAYMEO@chatham-kent.ca or 519-436-6600.
